What Is Iodine?

Iodine is a relatively rare element of the earth’s crust (ranking 47th in abundance). The fact that most soils contain very little iodine has led to widespread deficiencies in both human and animal populations. Iodine, however, is more concentrated in seawater and vegetables that grow in seawater.

What Does Iodine Do For Us?

The main biological role of iodine in the body is to support the functioning of the thyroid gland and thyroid hormones. The thyroid is crucial in regulating that basal metabolic rate, or the rate at which the body digests and metabolizes nutrients from foods. Without this function important cellular activity is decreased and/or stopped.

Major deficiencies of iodine have been shown to cause goiters (enlargement of the thyroid gland) as well as mental retardation. A lack of iodine is also suspected in the formation of certain kinds of cancers, including breast cancer and stomach cancer.

Signs That You May Need More Iodine

There are several indicators that you may need to supplement your iodine intake. If you experience any of the following you may want to get yourself checkout out for Iodine. This can be done by any good natural health care professional or by using a simple at home test.

Unexplainable weight gain (not due to a change in diet or lifestyle)

Sudden onset of depression

Fatigue or chronic fatigue

Weakness of muscles

What Are The Recommended Daily Intakes for Iodine?

Iodine should not be taken in excess. If you take too much it can be toxic – although getting too much through food sources is probably unlikely. For this reason I’m including both the recommended minimum and maximum daily allowances for iodine here.

In 2000, the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences developed new Dietary Reference Intakes for iodine. Adequate Intakes were established for children up to one year old, and Recommended Dietary Allowances were determined for all people over one year old.

mcg = microgram. 1 mcg is equivalent to 1/1000 of a milligram or one one millionth (1/1,000,000) of a gram.

0-6 months: 110 mcg

7-12 months: 130 mcg

1-8 years: 90 mcg

Boys 9-13 years: 120 mcg

Girls 9-13 years: 120 mcg

Boys 14-18 years: 150 mcg

Girls 14-18 years: 150 mcg

Men 19 years and older: 150 mcg

Women 19 years and older: 150 mcg

Pregnant women 14 years and older: 220 mcg

Lactating women 14 years and older: 290 mcg

In an attempt to prevent iodine toxicity, the Institute of Medicine established the following Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (UL) for iodine:

1-3 years: 900 mcg

4-8 years: 300 mcg

9-13 years: 600 mcg

14-18 years: 900 mcg

19 years and older: 1,100 mcg

Pregnant women 14-18 years: 900 mcg

Pregnant women 19 years and older: 1,100 mcg

Lactating women 14-18 years: 900 mcg

Lactating women 19 years and older: 1,100 mcg

What Are The Best Natural Iodine Supplements and Iodine Rich Foods?

The best naturally occurring sources of iodine are found in sea vegetables. Milk and dairy products are also sometimes mentioned as good sources. But this only applies if the cows in question have been fed iodine supplements. This is usually the case in the U.S. and other western countries, but not necessarily. It’s a good idea to find out if you plan to use dairy products for iodine. High quality multivitamins may also contain proper levels of iodine.

Other Helpful Tips About Getting The Most Out of Iodine

A few other tips when it comes to iodine. If you think you have an iodine deficiency or a thyroid that is not fully functioning you should avoid these foods that can interfere with the absorption of iodine:

cauliflower

broccoli

cabbage

mustard

tapioca

corn

There are two forms of iodine: iodine 127 (safe, natural dietary iodine) and iodine 131 (a harmful, radioactive byproduct of nuclear energy). Your body absorbs and retains any kind of iodine to which it is exposed. Most of it is deposited in your thyroid gland or breast tissues. These are the two places that use the highest amounts of iodine.

If you spend time in a spa or hot tub, be aware that using chloride or bromide to kill bacteria can also lower your iodine levels. Also know that bromine is an ingredient in pesticides and eating foods sprayed with it can have the same effect. Eat organic!

Herbs such as Maca or Ginseng are well know adaptogens – substances that help normalize various bodily functions – adapting to what your body needs in a given moment. Iodine also appears to have the same effect and may just be the ultimate adaptogen.

Finally – Iodine Supplements and Radiation

You may have heard about taking iodine tablets as protection against radioactive iodine 131. These are meant to prevent you thyroid gland from uptaking iodine 131 during a fallout situation and thereby prevent thyroid cancer. Local authorities should advise residents if this is necessary.

And still using the information here you can choose to keep your body’s level of iodine at health promoting levels using natural iodine supplements and iodine rich foods. It’s a great long term health strategy.

Using Raw Foods To Treat Allergies

One of the things that really worked for me to improve my allergies was to start eating a diet based on raw foods. Since being on 90% raw food I’ve noticed that my sensitivity to dust, weeds and pollens is much less than it used to be.

The top allergy causing foods are (in order):

Milk and other dairy products

Eggs

Peanuts and tree nuts

Fish and shellfish

Soy

Wheat (especially processed wheat)

In addition to eating a high percentage of fresh fruits and vegetables, taking the following steps will also help to reduce allergies.

Replace all dairy products with nut milks, coconut yogurt and nut cheeses. If you have allergies to nuts, then use avocados and cold pressed oils.

Replace wheat products with dehydrated seed crackers, cookies and breads.

Eliminate processed sugar. This includes high fructose corn syrup, which is highly toxic. Read labels – even if it says “organic.” Learn to make your own condiments such as ketchup, mustard and mayo.

Eat Organic. Limit exposure to pesticides and chemical fertilizers. This is particularly important for children. If you can’t get organic make sure to wash all vegetables and fruits and peel fruits with thin skins such as apples. This is a list of non-organic foods with the most and least pesticides

Foods With Most Pesticides:

Peaches

Apples

Sweet bell peppers

Celery

Nectarines

Strawberries

Cherries

Pears

Imported grapes

Spinach

Lettuce

Potatoes

Foods with Least Pesticides

Onions

Avocados

Sweet corn

Pineapples

Mangos

Asparagus

Sweet peas

Kiwi

Bananas

Cabbage

Broccoli

Papaya

Last week an old friend invited me and my family to dinner. I made a raw berry cheesecake to bring and told her that I’d be happy with any kind of salad for the main course. She insisted on making me some kind of gourmet raw food dish. Since my friend works full time, I knew she wouldn’t have much time to prepare a dish. Plus, although she’s been vegetarian for years she has no raw food preparation experience. For that reason I needed to find an easy recipe that would still make her feel like she had prepared something really good.

I went to my raw food recipe book and found this old favorite. Note that the picture is just of the raw ingredients before the sauce is mixed in. Share and enjoy!

Raw Ratatouille Recipe

Tools: Blender, Dehydrator or glass jar and sun

Ingredients:

Vegetables:

½ red pepper (sliced thin with mandolin or by hand)

1 medium zucchini (spiralized into ribbons)

raw ratatouille ingredients

¾ C spinach (chopped small)

1 Tbl olive oil

pinch of salt

Sauce:

½ C sun-dried tomatoes (soaked)

1 clove garlic

2 tsp olive oil

1 tsp lemon juice

2 small tomatoes

1 Tbl fresh basil (chiffonad)

1 tsp fresh time (chopped)

1 Tbl fresh parsley (chopped)

1 ½ tsp salt

Preparation:

Vegetables: Combine the vegetables in a large mixing bowl and sprinkle with olive oil and a pinch of salt. Massage the vegetables gently. For softer vegetables put vegetables on a teflex sheet and allow to soften in the dehydrator for 1 – 2 hours, or put them in a large glass jar in the sun for 6 – 8 hours.

Sauce: Combine all ingredients for the sauce and blend until smooth and creamy. Add a little water if necessary to get the blender to run. After you have made the sauce, pour over the vegetables and mix well. Serve and enjoy!

Makes about 2 cups

The lowly lemon. Most of us use them regularly, but did you know that lemon and lime juice are very powerful in terms of health and healing in the body?

The Nutritional Properties Of Fresh Lemon Juice

Lemons boast 3 major components in terms of nutrition

Lemon juice is high in Vitamin C – 1/4 cup in fact contains 47% of the RDA of this health promoting vitamin. Vitamin C of course is necessary for optimal functioning of the immune system. That’s one reason why lemons have historically been prized by sailors and miner in remote places.

Lemons and lime contain high levels of phytonutrient flavonoids called flavonol glycosides. These nutrients have antibiotic, disease fighting properties. For example, it has been seen in villages in Africa that the introduction of fresh lemon juice to the daily diet protects people against contracting cholera.

Lemon and lime juice are rich in limonins. These phytonutrients are high in antioxidants, which slow cellular aging. Moreover, they have been linked to protection against the formation of cancer cells.

10 Things Lemon Juice Can Do For Your Health

Here are several ways that drinking fresh lemon juice can help the body to heal.

Settling the stomach - although acidic outside of the body, lemon juice has an alkalizing effect within the body. This supports easy digestion and elimination

Improving skin tone – lemon juice, with its high level of antioxidants and vitamin C supports healthy and glowing skin.

Toothaches – fresh lemon juice, applied directly to the gums can reduce pain from toothaches.

Sore Throat – gargling with a 50/50 mixture of lemon juice and water can eliminate a sore throat.

Blood purification – lemon juice stimulates the production of bile in the liver and supports the cleansing of blood cells.

Flushes bacteria from the body - lemon juice works as a diuretic to help the body get rid of pathogens. It is thought that this is why drinking lemon juice daily can help people with rheumatism.

Losing weight - because of its cleansing properties, drinking fresh lemon juice can help reduce your weight. There is in fact a weight loss program called the “Master Cleanse” that uses a drink made from lemon juice.

Depression – lemon juice and even the aroma of lemon peel is mood uplifting and can be used to help people overcome depression.

Fever – lemon juice has been used traditionally to help break a fever. This is most likely due to its high content of vitamin C.

High blood pressure – drinking lemon juice holds some promise for reducing high blood pressure.

Why Lemon Juice Needs To Be Fresh

All of the benefits above only relate to drinking fresh, unpasteurized lemon juice. That’s because bottled lemon juice, like the kind you can buy in the store in those little plastic lemons, has been heated to high temperatures and exposed to preservatives that effectively destroy its delicate nutritional properties.

It’s always best to use only fresh raw lemon juice. Beyond that most doctors recommend that we eat a high percentage of our diet in the form of fresh raw food.

How To Use Fresh Lemon Juice

Using fresh lemon juice for health and healing is really simple actually. Simply juice 1-3 tablespoons of lemon or lime juice and mix it in with a cup of water. You can also add a touch of honey if you like to improve the taste.

Although you can drink lemon water throughout the day, it’s important to drink it first thing in the morning before consuming anything else as well. The reason for this is that lemon juice will alkalize your stomach and kick start your liver into functioning. Both of these tasks are harder if you’ve already eaten.

What To Do Next?

Get yourself some fresh lemons or limes and start juicing and enjoying.

Vegetarian Quotes

“You put a baby in a crib with an apple and a rabbit. If it eats the rabbit and plays with the apple, I’ll buy you a new car.” ~Harvey Diamond

“Man is the only animal that can remain on friendly terms with the victims he intends to eat until he eats them. ” ~Samuel Butler, Note-Books, 1912

“If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.” ~Paul McCartney

“Think of the fierce energy concentrated in an acorn! You bury it in the ground, and it explodes into an oak! Bury a sheep, and nothing happens but decay.” ~George Bernard Shaw

“One farmer says to me, ‘You cannot live on vegetable food solely, for it furnishes nothing to make the bones with;’ and so he religiously devotes a part of his day to supplying himself with the raw material of bones; walking all the while he talks behind his oxen, which, with vegetable-made bones, jerk him and his lumbering plow along in spite of every obstacle. “ ~Henry David Thoreau

“How can you eat anything with eyes?” ~Will Kellogg

“The beef industry has contributed to more American deaths than all the wars of this century, all natural disasters, and all automobile accidents combined. If beef is your idea of “real food for real people” you’d better live real close to a real good hospital.” ~Neal Barnard

“Why does Sea World have a seafood restaurant? I’m halfway through my fishburger and I realize, Oh my God. I could be eating a slow learner.” ~Lynda Montgomery

“Animals are my friends… and I don’t eat my friends.” ~George Bernard Shaw

“We don’t need to eat anyone who would run, swim, or fly away if he could.” ~James Cromwell

“If you knew how meat was made, you’d probably lose your lunch.” ~k.d. lang

“Nothing more strongly arouses our disgust than cannibalism, yet we make the same impression on Buddhists and vegetarians, for we feed on babies, though not our own.” ~Robert Louis Stevenson

“My situation is a solemn one. Life is offered to me on condition of eating beefsteaks. But death is better than cannibalism. My will contains directions for my funeral, which will be followed not by mourning coaches, but by oxen, sheep, flocks of poultry, and a small traveling aquarium of live fish, all wearing white scarfs in honor of the man who perished rather than eat his fellow creatures.” ~George Bernard Shaw

“I did not become a vegetarian for my health, I did it for the health of the chickens.” ~Isaac Bashevis Singer

“I just could not stand the idea of eating meat – I really do think that it has made me calmer…. People’s general awareness is getting much better, even down to buying a pint of milk: the fact that the calves are actually killed so that the milk doesn’t go to them but to us cannot really be right, and if you have seen a cow in a state of extreme distress because it cannot understand why its calf isn’t by, it can make you think a lot.” ~Kate Bush

“I think if you want to eat more meat you should kill it yourself and eat it raw so that you are not blinded by the hypocrisy of having it processed for you.” ~Margi Clark

Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet. ~Albert Einstein

Hey, Mark Ament here.

And you’re reading my uncensored review of what I really thought about” Fibroid Cure” by Shola Oslo

Note that this is a review. If you’re looking for the official Fibroid Cure website, then click here: Fibroid Cure

I’m writing this review to help you find out if Shola Oslo’s book can actually help you or not. You should know, right from the start, that I personally own the book and have read it carefully.

Also, I’ll be going into the good and the bad points of Fibroid Cure, so if that’s not something you want to read, you might not want to continue reading.

My first impressions of Fibroid Cure:

I chose to review the Fibroid Cure book precisely because it is one of the top selling natural fibroid solutions around. Since I review a lot of books on natural health, I have a pretty good sense of what makes for helpful, quality information and what doesn’t.

When I opened the email to download the Fibroid Cure I was impressed to find that the program comes with 4 PDF files:

The main book which details Shola Oslo’s program- 113 pages

A 7 Step Action plan that tells you everything you need to do – 13 pages

A book on “healing foods” that tells you some of the best things to eat for fibroids – 23 pages

A nice explanation of when to use alternative medicine and when not to – 13 pages

The top things that I learned from Fibroid Cure:

As I opened the files and read them I found that the information was very well organized and presented. The first part of the main book contains a description of what fibroids are, why doctors think nearly 75% of women get them and what the conventional medical treatments for them are. The author also explains the dangers of those treatments, which include extreme procedures like historectomy.

Beyond that, Oslo goes quickly into all of the major natural treatments for fibroids. She reveals:

The link between estrogens and fibroids and why you need to avoid drinking from plastic bottles

The most dangerous medicine when it comes to treating fibroids

What kind of simple exercise can actually reduce the size of fibroids

Powerful herbs that can eliminate fibroids

The importance of detoxification and other lifestyle factors that can reverse the condition

Plus a lot more from both herbal medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

What I find most helpful about Fibroid Cure:

If you’re suffering from fibroids, all of the information above is of course great to have. But it’s only relevant to you if you actually put it to use. That’s where Oslo’s book really shines.

Unlike many other programs out there, the Fibroid Cure gives you a 7 step action plan for treating fibroids naturally. The steps are very clear and easy to follow. Oslo includes photos along with descriptions when needed, which makes the program even better in my opinion.

Who would benefit from purchasing Fibroid Cure:

I think anyone looking to treat their fibroids naturally will benefit from this book. The information included is much more comprehensive than most doctors will be able to give you. They simply are trained to treat fibroids with radical procedures and extreme drugs. That said, if you think you have severe fibroids, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible. I would just recommend going to one who knows something about alternative medicine.

What I think was left out of Fibroid Cure:

I found the information in the book to be incredibly complete. The only thing I think that the author could have included is a section on health promoting recipes and in particular a section on how to cleanse and detox your body naturally through simple dietary changes. Since diet does play an important role in Oslo’s proposed treatment plan, I would have liked to seen some more information. But then again, since I’m an expert in detox diet plans as well as the raw food diet, I’m aware that I have incredibly high standards.

How quickly Fibroid Cure can help someone:

Like any alternative approach to healing, the program outlined in the book is going to take some time. It’s not a quick fix cure. However, most women who follow the 7 step program report positive results within just the first 3-4 weeks. When you consider that fibroids take years and years to develop, getting results in just under a month is pretty impressive.

Proof that Fibroid Cure really works:

I’ve read through all of the many testimonials of women grateful to have come across the program and seen that Fibroid Cure is making a difference in their health and lives. Also, though, I’ve seen the results in my own wife who has used parts of the program since some small fibroids were discovered in a routine ultrasound after her pregnancy. Recently she went for her annual check up and was found to be almost entirely fibroid free!

Negatives about Fibroid Cure:

There’s really nothing major missing in this program. But be aware that it will require you to change some things in your life. This program is not for anyone who wants to sit on the sidelines of life and wait for things to happen. On the other hand, if you’re motivated to cure your fibroids naturally, all the information you need is here.

Getting the most out of Fibroid Cure:

If you’re willing to make positive changes to improve your health, you really can reverse this condition using the information in the book. You’ll need to have a few hours to read through the information included and then you’ll need to take action to follow the steps outlined in the program. But if you do, I think you’ll be impressed.

My Final Words Fibroid Cure:

One of the things I appreciate most about this program in terms of risk, is that it comes with a 60 day complete money back guarantee. If you don’t like it for any reason, you just let the publisher know and you get a refund. No questions asked. That’s a good deal. I mean, where else can we expect such service? Certainly not from our doctors, either alternative or medical.

Having seen and read the material in Fibroid Cure by Shola Oslo I can give it my wholehearted support as a sane, balanced and natural approach to eliminating fibroids and improving health in general.

Native to southern Mexico and now grown throughout the tropics, it’s rumored that Christopher Columbus once called the Papaya the “fruit of the angels.”

Not surprising, given the sweet, juicy taste and creamy texture of papaya.

But papaya is more than just a tasty treat. As it turns out, research into the fruit has uncovered many potential health benefits that come from regularly enjoying it. Here are the most commonly cited benefits:

Due to a high concentration of the digestive enzymes papain and chymopapain, which are unique to the fruit, papaya offers valuable support for calming an upset stomach and speeding digestion – especially the digestion of protein. Green, or unripe papaya, contains the highest levels of these enzymes.

Papaya also contains significant amounts of vitamin C, E and beta-carotene which can help reduce inflammation and support healing from minor burns.

Ripe papaya juice has been seen to ease constipation due to it’s high water and fiber content.

Papaya can be helpful in preventing morning sickness and motion sickness.

Papaya seeds are sometimes recommended for expelling intestinal parasites like worms. This can be especially valuable in a tropical climate.

I enjoy using ripe papaya in my smoothies. Another way I love to eat papaya is simply blended up with a tablespoon of coconut oil and a drop of lemon essential oil. That one, I serve over ice.

By the way, if you can’t easily get papaya, you may look into using papaya enzyme capsules. They are available at most health food stores and do a lot to support good digestion.

One of the challenges for kids (of all ages) is making sure to eat enough green foods. Leafy green vegetables and herbs are among the most powerful and beneficial foods for overall health and wellness.

According to whole food nutritional research reported by WHF foods leafy greens can help with all of the following:

Decreasing the likelihood of contracting certain kinds of cancers

Helping combat ovarian and prostate cancer

Supporting bone growth in kids and bone density in adults – this is due to vitamin K and calcium and magnesium

Contributing to good circulation and healthy heart function

Promoting easy digestion and elimination – especially when greens are eaten raw

Reducing inflammation

Supporting brain function due to vitamin E

Providing plenty of iron for energy and endurance

Helping the body to detoxify – due to high levels of chlorophyll

We don’t have to look far in nature to see the benefits of eating plenty of greens.

Our closest genetic relatives are chimpanzees and gorillas. Chimps eat about 60% of their diet in greens. Gorillas are at about 80%. Both species are pound for pound much, much stronger than humans.

The trick for most of us, including children, is getting enough greens in our diets. I personally like to use green superfood powders in addition to drinking plenty of fresh green juices and eating salads. The green powders combined with the juices are concentrated and nutrient dense, yet small enough to eat in relatively large quantities.

But for many people salads, juices and green smoothies can get somewhat boring.

If that’s the case I like to mix leafy greens into savory dishes like pates, living food lasgna, raw food crackers and, my all time favorite: super green pesto.

I’m really happy to report that everyone in my family, including my small daughter, loves the pesto I make. It only takes 15 minutes to create and keeps for a couple of weeks. For the kids, it’s also high in calories and good fats, plus all the goodness of the greens.

Here’s my Pesto Recipe that kids love

Tools needed: Blender

Ingredients:

2 c fresh basil leaves

2 c arrugula

2 T parsley

2 T corriander

1 T freshly squeezed lemon juice

2 medium cloves of garlic (garlic health benefits here)

1/2 T celtic sea salt

1/2 C cold pressed olive oil

2 c nuts and/or seeds – I prefer cashews and pumpkin seeds – macadamia nuts and traditional pine nuts are also great

Preparation:

Wash all the greens and place them in the bottom of the blender. Add all the other ingredients except the nuts and blend until you arrive at a liquid consistency. Next add the nuts and blend until they are well incorporated.

Serving suggestions:

My little one loves this on celery or packed inside of cherry tomatoes. I love pesto wrapped up in a nori sheet with even more greens on it.
