Native to southern Mexico and now grown throughout the tropics, it’s rumored that Christopher Columbus once called the Papaya the “fruit of the angels.”

Not surprising, given the sweet, juicy taste and creamy texture of papaya.

But papaya is more than just a tasty treat. As it turns out, research into the fruit has uncovered many potential health benefits that come from regularly enjoying it. Here are the most commonly cited benefits:

Due to a high concentration of the digestive enzymes papain and chymopapain, which are unique to the fruit, papaya offers valuable support for calming an upset stomach and speeding digestion – especially the digestion of protein. Green, or unripe papaya, contains the highest levels of these enzymes.

Papaya also contains significant amounts of vitamin C, E and beta-carotene which can help reduce inflammation and support healing from minor burns.

Ripe papaya juice has been seen to ease constipation due to it’s high water and fiber content.

Papaya can be helpful in preventing morning sickness and motion sickness.

Papaya seeds are sometimes recommended for expelling intestinal parasites like worms. This can be especially valuable in a tropical climate.

I enjoy using ripe papaya in my smoothies. Another way I love to eat papaya is simply blended up with a tablespoon of coconut oil and a drop of lemon essential oil. That one, I serve over ice.

By the way, if you can’t easily get papaya, you may look into using papaya enzyme capsules. They are available at most health food stores and do a lot to support good digestion.

What Are Cloves?

Cloves are the dried flower buds of evergreen trees that grow in tropical climates. Here is a photo I took recently near Munduk, Bali of clove flowers growing on the slopes of the volcano.

After they are harvested, the flowers are sun dried. The majority of cloves are used to produce cigarettes called “Kretek.” But the highest quality harvests are reserved for export to the spice market.

What Are the Medicinal Properties of Cloves?

Whole cloves have a number of powerful medicinal properties that have been known for hundreds of years, thanks in large part to their continual use in Aruvedic medicine. In tropical climates cloves have been used as a remedy for all of the following conditions: scabies, cholera, malaria and tuberculosis.

Here are the main healing properties attributed to whole clove powder and essential oil of clove.

Stimulation of the digestive system. Cloves promote the flow of enzymes in the stomach which can help speed digestion, increase metabolism and ease flatulence. Cloves have also been traditionally used to stop vomitting.

Use as an effective local anesthetic. Clove and clove oil have long been used in dentistry for pain relief. This is in large part due to high concentrations of Eugenol.

Use as an antispasmodic. A poultice made of cloves can reduce muscle pain, spasms and cramps. A tea made with clove is also effective for supressing a cough.

Cloves are antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antiseptic. This makes them ideal as a daily immune boosting supplement.

Cloves are extremely antiparasitic and can help in the elimination of various intestinal parasites.

Cloves act as a natural insect repellent.

How to Use Cloves

Whole cloves be powdered and taken internally and/or used externally. Here are a number of ways to use cloves based on given conditions:

Cholera — In treating the most severe symptoms of cholera, boil about 4 grams of cloves in 3 liters of water until 1/2 the liquid has evaporated. Then drink the remaining liquid.

Cough — Chew one or two cloves mixed with a 1/2 teaspoon of honey. Alternatively you can make a tea of cloves by following the recipe above.

Earache — Soak a whole clove in sesame or coconut oil for 2-3 hours. Then place the clove in the ear, being very careful not to put it anywhere near the eardrum.

Muscle cramps/pain — Grind a handful of cloves into a fine powder using a coffee grinder and mix with 1-2 tablespoons of sesame, olive or coconut oil. Place the poultice over the affected area.

Parasites — Grind cloves and take 1 teaspoon daily. For this remedy to be effective you must continue it for up to six months.

Toothache — Grind cloves into a powder and mix with a teaspoon of honey and then place on the affected area of the mouth.

Upset stomach and/or vomiting — Drink clove tea and/or chew 1-2 cloves carefully. Alternatively, mix 1 teaspoon of clove powder into water and drink.

Daily immune boost — I use cloves almost daily by taking one capsule full of clove powder. That’s about 1/2 of a teaspoon. I do take 1 day off every week or so.

Where to Buy Cloves

Whole cloves can be found at most supermarkets. I recommend that you buy them whole and grind them yourself as pre-ground cloves will be less potent due to oxidation. Also, try to find organic cloves whenever possible.

As a remedy cloves are relatively inexpensive. You should be able to purchase 100g of cloves for less than $5 US.

What about Essential Oil of Clove?

Essential oil of clove retains most of the properties of whole cloves and can be easier to use for certain applications such as toothache. If you are considering using clove oil, you need to make sure that it is 100% pure and therapeutic grade. Otherwise you may be using an oil that has been cut with chemicals. Contact us for a good supplier.

One of the newest foods that is gaining a lot of attention for its therapeutic and daily health benefits is “Salba.” Most people haven’t yet heard of it, but I imagine that this will change soon.

The History of Salba

1. Salba was first used as food as early as 3500 B.C., and served as a cash crop in central Mexico between 1500 and 900 B.C. According to Spanish manuscripts, the Aztecs ate the seeds of this semitropical plant, also known as “chia,” to improve their endurance. They believed it gave them mystical, almost supernatural energy and power.

2. In the 1500s during the Spanish conquest of America, leader Hernan Cortez was convinced that if he could destroy the crop, he would win the empire from the Aztecs. He set acre upon acre on fire to destroy the will of his enemy.

3. After the Spanish conquest of Mexico, the mysterious seeds were probably introduced to Spain around 1521. Famed botanist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) gave these seeds the botanical name Salvia hispanica L.

4. Knowledge of this plant was revived in 1991 when Adolfo and Alfredo Mealla began cultivating it in Argentina in 1991. The brothers painstakingly sorted out the few nutritionally consistent white grains from the black ones and replanted them to produce an all white harvest with higher nutritional density. In 1994 Alfredo gave this grain a new name, Salba, which is a combination of the botanical name “Salvia hispanica L.” and the Latin name for white, “Alba”.

5. Starting in 1994 the grain was extensively researched at the University of Toronto leading to the conclusion “could be considered the world’s most nutritious food crop and thus can be used as a global remedy for world hunger.”

6. In 2004 Salba was introduced to North America and to Canada where it is continues to receive acclaim.

What Makes Salba So Powerful

Salba is the highest known whole food source of omega-3’s found in nature;(3 1⁄2 ounces of Salba® contain as much omega-3 as 28 ounces of Atlantic salmon)

Salba has:

more calcium than 3 cups of whole milk

higher, and more bioavailable protein content than soy, and more vegetable protein content than 1 1⁄2 cups of kidney beans

the highest natural fiber content (43g per 100g) of any food -more fiber than 1 ¼ cups of All-Bran cereal

the iron equivalent of 3 cups of raw spinach

the Potassium content of 1 1/2 bananas

as much Vitamin C as seven oranges

antioxidant capacity three times the strength of blueberries with Myrecetin counts 270 times the strength of red wine

What are the benefits:

Dr. Vladimir Vuksan – one of the developers of the revolutionary gylcemic index – calls Salba “the perfect functional food.” Dr. Vuksan studied the grain intensively for 6 months and reports these findings in the article, “Seeds of Wellness: Return of a Supergrain” in The Saturday Evening Post (Nov/Dec 2005).

Here are some of the findings:

Salba reduced after meal blood glucose and plasma insulin levels, compared to the control diet

C-Reactive protein, a marker of inflammation, was significantly lower (40%) than control at the end of the study

Salba significantly lowered the systolic and diastolic blood pressure (>10mm/5mmGH)

Salba decreased coagulation (blood thinning) by 30%

No adverse effect was noted on glycemic control or blood lipids as previously seen with high doses of omega-3 fatty acids

Salba also shows promise as a fiber supplement to keep the bowels moving well while at the same time providing Omega 3s, iron, magnesium and vitamin C.

How to use Salba:

Salba can be taken in its whole form or ground when used in cooking. Salba can be added to yogurt, cereal, salads, beverages, and used in baking. Refrigerate Salba after grinding.
Where to find Salba:

Salba is the only grain that holds a medical patent (60-274.256). It It is also non-GMO certified and currently maintains the Canadian Kosher Certification: COR 302.

It is sold in health foods stores and online. As it is so new, you may have to ask your health food store to order it.

We live in a world undreamed of by our ancestors. We can travel thousands of miles in just hours. We can be constantly connected with loved one and friends. We have amazing creature comforts. And, in terms of food, we can eat foods from all over the world. As conventional agriculture continues to deplete our soils, more and more of us turn to some of these foods for balancing and increasing our health and energy. Peruvian Maca is among the most powerful and increasingly used of all these foods.

I love maca and will write more about it on this site. Today I want to focus on one of the most exciting effects of maca powder.

Research shows that maca root powder increases sperm count and semen volume, and may improve both erectile and ovarian function. One doctor, Ernesto Chacon, discovered the four alkaloids present in maca that are responsible for its reputed positive effects on these hormonal issues. Those who have added maca to their diet claim a significant increase in libido, enhanced sexual function and desire.

And what about using maca in fertility treatments? Well, maca has already been used for centuries in South America for fertility. In the United States and Europe men and women who have had difficulty conceiving are beginning to report pregnancies after using maca. To get the best results both partners (male/female) should be using Maca while working on conception. Women usually stop taking maca when pregnancy is discovered and resume Maca if they are breast-feeding to support milk production.

Many years ago when I was first getting into the raw vegan lifestyle, I went to an extraordinary raw food festival in Oregon. It was in a beautiful outdoor setting, next to a lake, and very appropriate for nature loving raw food enthusiasts.

Under the canopy of shade trees, I enjoyed listening to several top pioneers of the raw food movement speak on the benefits of raw nutrition. I also met a very impressive man who had recently won the non-supplemented Mr. Universe contest as a raw vegan - at the age of almost 50! He certainly was living proof that you can get enough protein on the raw vegetarian diet.

But of all the amazing people I met that weekend, there is one who really sticks out in my mind. She was working at a booth selling raw organic coconut oil from Mexico. During one of the sessions, while most people were listening to the speakers, I paused at her booth to listen to her remarkable story about young coconuts.

Healing With Coconuts Story:

“A few years back,” she told me, “when I was in my middle 50s, I was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer. My doctor gave me about 6 weeks to live. I was shocked, but instead of sitting at home waiting to die, I decided to fulfill a long time dream of visiting Mexico. So I packed some bags and headed to a remote beach in Baja. Given her the condition of my stomach, I wasn’t able to eat any spicy Mexican foods. Even most fruits were out of the question. In fact, the only thing that really felt good for to eat was young coconut water and young coconut flesh. There were a lot of coconut palms on the beach where I was staying. So, that’s all I ate. After about 3 weeks I noticed I began to feel a bit better. And then when the dreaded 6 week deadline passed and I actually felt a whole lot better. I stayed in Mexico for another month, continuing the coco diet. When I finally returned home the first thing I did was pay a visit to my doctor. I wish I had a picture of the total shock on his face when he saw me walk through the door. Not only was I alive, but I looked pretty good too. I was down 15 pounds and had radiant skin with a nice tan. After collecting himself, my doctor ran some tests and found that the I was cancer free. That inspired me so much that I decided to sell my things in the US and move to Mexico. Within a few weeks I had put a deposit down on a coconut farm in Mexico.”

The story of this simple, humble and very alive woman touched me and motivated me to do some research on the nutritional properties of young coconuts. I had often enjoyed them but had no idea how great they were for my health.

As it turns out, young coconut water and young coconut flesh is one of the most amazing foods we can eat. Here’s why:

The water and flesh from young coconuts contains the full range of B vitamins, with the exception of B6 and B12. B vitamins are essential for providing us energy as they break carbohydrates and protein down. They also support nervous system function and, interestingly, the muscle tone of the stomach.

Young coconut water is also high minerals, particularly calcium (for bones), magnesium (for the heart) and potassium (for muscles).

An average young coconut provides 3 grams of dietary fiber which helps proper digestion and elimination.

Fresh coconut water is very high in electrolytes – much higher than most sports drinks. This makes it a great choice for athletes and children who exercise a lot.

Finally, the water of young coconuts is completely sterile and so close to the structure of human blood that it can be transfused directly. In fact, it was regularly used during WW II for wounded soldiers when blood plasma was low.

Where To Get Young Coconuts

Coconuts grow only in tropical climates. If you live in a tropical climate, they’ll be easy to find. Make sure to ask for young coconuts and not mature ones. Young coconuts are about 5 months old and have green hulls as pictured here.

Fresh Young Drinking Coconut

If you don’t live in a tropical climate you’ll probably be able to find coconuts in your local health food store. Usually they are from Thailand and are white in color –the green hulls have been removed for shipping.

Thai Coconuts

Don’t confuse young coconuts with mature ones – these have dark brown shells and very thick flesh. These are mostly used to make coconut oil. The water from these coconuts doesn’t taste good and has lost most of it’s nutritional potency.

Interesting Coconut Facts And Folklore

In Sanskrit the coconut tree (cocos nucifera) is called “kalpa vriksha,” meaning “the tree which provides all the necessities or life.”

In India , coconuts are fertility symbols. When a woman wants to conceive, it’s common for her to go to a priest to receive a blessing with coconuts.

In the Philippines it is said that humans originated from two coconuts washed up by the sea onto a rocky shore.

Young coconut flesh is the first solid food for babies in Thailand, traditionally fed to them by a Buddhist priest.

In traditional Balinese culture , women were forbidden to touch the coconut tree. Men feared that a woman’s touch may drain the fertility of the coconut tree into her own fertility.

Natives of New Guinea believe that when the first man died on the island, a coconut tree sprouted from his head.

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is part of the lily family and it’s medicinal use dates back to 4000 BCE. It grows well in nearly every climate, so it is known throughout the world. Hippocrates, the founder of western medicine, used garlic in some cancer treatments. In ancient Egypt garlic was valued as a general health tonic and sometimes even used as currency. Later in the middle ages, garlic was used in treating victims of the plaque. Even as late as WW II, garlic was used as an effective replacement for antibiotics.

The Medicinal Properties of Garlic

Garlic is high in sulfur, which accounts for some of it’s medicinal potency. The stronger the taste of the garlic, the higher the sulfur content and the better it is for you. Two other medicinally potent compounds in garlic are Diallyl Sulphides, which increase blood circulation, and Allicin, an anti-biotic, and anti-fungal compound.

In general terms raw garlic is:

A broad spectrum anti-biotic

Highly Anti-fungal

Highly Anti-bacterial

Highly Anti-parasitical

High in antioxidants

And the major health benefits of garlic are:

Increases blood circulation and thins the blood – this can lower blood pressure, reduce the likelihood of blood clots and lower the risk of heart attack and stroke

Suppresses the growth of tumors

Decreases levels of LDL or “bad cholesterol”

Stimulates the immune system by increasing blood cell count

Supports recovery from cancer

Kills some intestinal parasites – this may be related to its potency as a cancer treatment, as some naturopaths consider intestinal parasites to be directly linked to cancer

Repels insects – some sulphur in raw garlic passes into the blood and is carried to the skin where it is excreted. This helps to make the skin unattractive to insects

Soothes coughs and colds – this is due to garlic’s anti-biotic properties

Kills fungi such as athletes foot and warts

It’s important to note that these health benefits only apply to the use of raw garlic. The active compounds in garlic are destroyed by cooking. They are also lost over time. Crushing or chopping raw garlic releases its medicinally potent compounds, which are sensitive to oxidation. It is best to consume the raw fresh garlic shortly after crushing or chopping to get the highest benefit.

How To Use Raw Garlic

Internally – take 1 to 2 cloves or crushed raw garlic every other day. I sometimes just pop a clove in my mouth with some olive oil or avocado and chew it up (to keep it from burning). I also blend it in raw soups, use it in guacamole or sprinkle it over my salad. You can eat raw parsley afterwards to sweeten your breath.

Topically – make a poultice with raw garlic to use on skin infections like athletes foot or warts. Be careful not to irritate the skin by using too much.

As A Tincture – you can use garlic oil drops in the nose, as a gargle or in the ears to fight infection. Make garlic oil drops by mixing one clove crushed garlic with 10ml (4 oz.) pure water.

Garlic is generally very safe, but in some people and at higher doses, it can cause irritation to the stomach and skin. Also people who are on any kind of blood thinning medication not take garlic medicinally without first talking to their doctor. Garlic should be used very sparingly with small children.

A Few Facts About Garlic

Garlic is probably descended from the species Allium longicuspis, which grows wild in south-western Asia

There are now over 300 varieties of garlic

China produces 10.5 billion kilos/year – about 75% of worldwide production

In Northeastern India, it is believed that garlic mixed with water spread around the home will keep snakes from entering

Garlic plants are very hardy and not attacked by pests

Know as a Bali Healing herb for centuries

A Christian myth considers that after Satan left the Garden of Eden, garlic arose in his left footprint, and onion in the right

Garlic cloves cooked whole have very little medicinal value

Central European folk beliefs considered garlic a powerful ward against demons, werewolves, and vampires

Garlic and onions were invoked as deities by ancient Egyptians at some religious ceremonies
