What Is Yoga?

in Meditation,Yoga

what is yogaI was going through some of my notes from my days as an avid Yoga asana practitioner and found this list of definitions of yoga that I collected.

What I find interesting about this list is that there is no mention of being able to do a handstand or perch your ankle behind your head.

Yoga Is…

“…the breaking of contact with pain.”   –Baghavad Gita

“…the restraint of the modifications of the mind.”  –Patanjali’s Sutra

“…the stilling of the fluctuations of the breath.”  –Hatha Yoga Pradipika

“…the science of the soul.”  –Osho

“…the union of the body with the mind and the mind with the soul.”  –B.K.S. Iyengar

“…a way of making sure that this week is going to be more joyful than last week.”  –Kofi Busia

“…a way of moving into the stillness in order to experience the truth of who you are.”  –Eric Schiffman

“…the sublimation of the modification of consciousness, but not the suppression or destruction of the mind.  Stillness is the nature of consciousness.”  –Amaranda Bhairavan
